Universal Orlando's water park is excellent — but there's a major 2026 closure that can derail your plans if you don't know about it.
Volcano Bay will close for a prolonged seasonal refurbishment starting October 26, 2026. The park plans to reopen on or before April 1, 2027.
If your Universal Orlando visit falls between October 26, 2026 and April 2027, Volcano Bay will not be available. Do not include a Volcano Bay day in your plans during this window. If you're visiting before October 26, Volcano Bay is open and operating normally.

Volcano Bay is Universal Orlando's water theme park, opened in 2017 and built around the dramatic 200-foot Krakatau volcano. It features some of the best water slides in Florida — from the signature Krakatau Aqua Coaster to the near-vertical Ko'okiri Body Plunge — plus a wave pool, a rushing river, a lazy river, and multiple family areas. It's a full-day experience and one of the best water parks in the country.
Volcano Bay's TapuTapu virtual queuing wristband system was retired in early 2026. The park now operates with traditional standby queues for its attractions. This is a meaningful change from how the park originally worked — if you visited Volcano Bay before 2026 and remember the "wait anywhere" wristband experience, that system is no longer in place.
The park's signature headline ride — a multi-person raft coaster that propels guests up and through the interior of the Krakatau volcano using water jets. You go both uphill and downhill, which makes it unique among water rides. This is the must-do first ride of the day. Krakatau draws the longest lines in the park — get there at opening and head here first.
A near-vertical drop slide at 70 degrees — you stand in a capsule, the floor drops, and you fall. One of the most intense water slides in Orlando. Not for the faint of heart. For guests who want the most thrilling experience at Volcano Bay, this is it. Lines build quickly — ride it early in the day.
A rushing, fast-moving river with waves and rapids — this is NOT a lazy river. Guests use flotation vests and travel through a forceful current. One of the park's most popular experiences and a guest favorite. Just grab a vest and join the flow when you're ready.
The actual slow, relaxing lazy river — a calmer contrast to TeAwa. Great for all ages, perfect for families with young children, and an excellent spot to decompress between the high-intensity slides.
Two body slides that launch guests off a platform and plunge them into a pool below — with a 4-foot and 6-foot drop into the water at the end. Different from most slides in the park and a crowd favorite for the unexpected splash landing experience.
Volcano Bay has multiple areas designed for young children and families, including Tot Tiki Reef (small slides for young children) and Runamukka Reef (a multi-level water play structure). The wave pool (Waturi Beach) is accessible for all ages and guests without height requirements.
Volcano Bay Nights is a special ticketed evening event — a separate ticket purchase from your standard Volcano Bay day admission. Select nights from May 3–Aug 21, 2026, the park stays open after dark with the Krakatau volcano illuminated and the park lit in tropical colors. This is genuinely one of the more underrated Universal experiences of the year, but plan for the added cost when budgeting your trip.
Not automatically. Volcano Bay requires a ticket that specifically includes the water park. Standard Universal Orlando tickets that cover Universal Studios Florida, Islands of Adventure, and Epic Universe do NOT include Volcano Bay unless explicitly stated. Always check your specific ticket type.
A 4-Day or 5-Day multi-park ticket that includes Volcano Bay is almost always the best value if a water park day is on your list. The per-day cost drops significantly compared to purchasing a separate Volcano Bay ticket. Cabana rental is the best upgrade at Volcano Bay. You get a shaded, private space with lounge chairs, a dedicated server, and towel service. During summer, Orlando heat is intense — a cabana makes the difference between a fun day and a miserable one. Book in advance; they sell out quickly on busy days.
The pavement throughout Volcano Bay gets extremely hot in summer — painfully so. Water shoes or sandals with proper soles are highly recommended. Many first-time visitors make the mistake of going barefoot and regret it within 20 minutes of arrival.
Weekdays are significantly lighter at Volcano Bay compared to weekends. If you have schedule flexibility, a Tuesday or Wednesday visit is dramatically more enjoyable than a Saturday during summer. Standby waits for Krakatau can stretch well over an hour on a busy weekend — on a quiet weekday that drops to 20–30 minutes.
Universal resort transportation runs directly to Volcano Bay — approximately a 12-minute bus ride from the main resort area, CityWalk, and on-site hotels. Skip driving and parking. The bus drops you directly at the Volcano Bay entrance, and the ride back is equally convenient after a long day.
With TapuTapu retired, Volcano Bay now runs on standby queues — so arrival time matters more than it used to. Get to the park at opening and head straight to Krakatau Aqua Coaster and Ko'okiri Body Plunge. These two draw the longest lines and are best experienced before crowds build mid-morning. Save the wave pool, lazy river, and family areas for the afternoon when slide lines peak.
